Kunninmathilakam Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple is in Mandur in the Kannur district. It is believed to have been consecrated in Thretha Yuga, the time of Sree Rama. Sree Rama instructed Anjaneya to get Siva's idol consecrated at Rameswaram. As he was coming with the idol, Anjaneya consecrated a part of that idol at Cheruthazham. As Anjaneya was late in arriving at Rameswaram, Rama consecrated an idol of Lord Siva made of clay at Rameswaram. Many devas and rishis are believed to have worshipped the Lord at Cheruthazham. A group of six Brahmin families built the temple for Lord Mahadeva and consecrated Him in three different forms. He more is worshipped as Dakshinamoorthy in the morning, Kiratha Moorthy in the afternoon and Umamaheswara in the evening. The temple was renovated in 1980 under the leadership of the temple trustees and the local devotees. The main sanctum has been renovated and the Namaskara mandapam, Nalambalam, Sancta for Vigneswara and Subrahmanya and the Saraswathy mandapam have been completed.
