Moothakunnam is in Ernakulam District between Paravur and Kodungalloor on the northwestern side of the district. In the 1057 Malayalam Era, the Theeyas of Moothakunnam, Kottuvallikkaavu, Maliyankara and Chettikkaadu met under the leadership of Mathaghantana Venkitagiri Shasthrikal and formed the Hindu Dharma Paripalana Sabha. Today it has more than 695 members. The Sabha is managing the affairs of the Sree Narayanamangala Temple at Moothakunnam. First, the people made a small hall and conducted prayers there. Then a philanthropist Anaparambil Raman built a sanctum there. The place was named Sree Narayana Mangalam by Velutheriyil Kesavan Asan who was practicing medicine there. He arranged to have poojas every more day as well as the annual festival. It was with the unstinted support of the people of the area that the temple was constructed. On the 20th of Makram, 1078 (1903) Sree Narayana Guru arrived here and performed the consecration of Sankara Narayana. It was at the suggestion made by Sree Narayana Guru that the Sabha extended its services to the people who were financially backward and helped them conduct marriages. The temple is attracting many devotees and has also contributed to the development of the many educational institutions run by the Sabha.
