Sree Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is in Ottapalam, in the Palakkad district. The most important fact about this temple is the dual nature of the Goddess Bhadrakali consecrated here. Unlike in other temples, the Goddess is consecrated facing the south. There are three flag posts in this temple which also makes it unique. Legends connect the temple with the time Sree Rama lived in the forest. It is believed that when Sree Rama and Lakshmana were searching for Sita, Goddess Bhadrakali and Shasthaav also reached here. Bhadrakali and Shasthaav were sent to look for a better place to rest. As they did not return even after a long time, more Rama and Lakshmana went in search of them. They were found at Thiruvilwamala. Seeing them there, Rama became angry and kicked Shasthhaav into a pit 50 feet deep. Bhadrakali ran to escape Rama’s wrath. Then at the spot where the temple stands today, Bhadrakali came to rest as a self-originated idol. It is believed that the Goddess later turned to face the south.
