Manakkadu Devi Temple

History

This temple is at Koduman- Angadikkal in Pathanamthitta district. Sree Bhuvaneswari Devi is the main deity in this 800-year-old temple. It is one of the few Bhuvaneswari temples in Kerala. The sanctum is built as a Mullapanthal, open to the sky so that the Goddess is exposed to rain and sun. According to legends Perumpillil Illam was in Malabar in ancient times. During the invasion by Tippu Sultan, one branch of that family came to Pathanamthitta. At one point in time, there was only an old man and his young son left in the family. The old Brahmin used to spend his time worshipping the Goddess. more Then there was a fire in the Illam and the old Brahmin took the idol of the Goddess and ran to the north to save it from the fire. He kept the idol under a tree in a marshy land and went back to his house. By that time the house had been burned down and the boy had been killed in that fire. Devastated at the death of his only son he left the place as a sanyasi. Years later, a Yogi came there and found the effulgence of the goddess under the tree. He informed the King and the people about what he had understood built a temple and consecrated the Goddess in a stone there with their help. Some members of the Perumpillil llam were brought to this area and the King entrusted them with the management of the temple. He also gave a lot of property for the running of the temple. It was after an astrological consultation in 1993 that the sanctum was built and an idol consecrated. The management of the temple is carried out by a trust formed by the two branches of the Perumpillil Illam. The open sanctum, the thick grove and the Theerthakulam or the sacred pond that never goes dry are the special features of this temple. Lotus flowers can be seen blooming in the Theerthakulam throughout the year. It is believed that the original place of the Malayalapuzha Devi is at Idathitta and that Malayalapuzha Bhagavathy and Manakkadu Bhagavathy are sisters. Hence worshipping both temples on the same day is considered especially auspicious. Subordinate deities are Ganapathy, Sivan, Naga Devathas, Yakshi, Muhurthy, Chamundi and Yogeeswaran.
