There is a natural water body about half a kilometre east of K.P. Road at Charummoodu in Mavelikkara of Alapuzha district. It was named Parayankulam and the place where it was situated was also known by that name. Centuries ago some Brahmins who came from Karnataka carried with them some idols of deities including one of Chamundy Devi. Finding the area of Parayankulam suitable for consecrating the deities, they consecrated them on the western side of this water body. The Chamundy Devi consecrated and worshipped here is a combination of the three forms of Chamundy; Rakthachamundi, Rudrachamundy and Bhadrachamundy. During the reign of Kayamkulam King, there was
more the practice of offering pujas and seeking the approval of the Goddess before any major decision was taken. Many untoward incidents affected the people there when the temple became dilapidated and pujas were stopped. After astrological consultations, a new temple was constructed and pujas were offered regularly. Apart from Chamundi Devi as the main deity, there is Aahoramoorthy or Muhoorthiyappuppan, who is consecrated in a natural cave formed by creepers. Marutha Ammumma, Arukola Valiyachan, Yogeeswara swamy, Nagaraja and Nagayakshi are also consecrated as subordinate deities. Apart from the usual daily pujas, Special Guruthy is offered to Chamundy Devi, Muhoorthiyappuppan and Arukola Valiyachan.
