Chowara Sree Krishna Temple

History

Chowara Sree Krishna Temple is situated in Chowara, on the banks of the Periyar River, in Sreemoolanagaram near Aluva, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. The principal deity of the temple is Sree Krishna, who is believed to bless devotees, especially couples, with healthy children (Santana Aishwarya Pradanan). The temple also houses an Upa Devata (sub-deity), Lord Ganapathi. The temple's eight-day annual festival culminates on the Rohini Nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Makaram with the Arattu ritual. Historically, the original temple, known as Moola Kshetram, was built by Kulasekhara Perumal. The present structure was constructed by the Chowara Kovilakam, with the intent of bringing peace, prosperity, more and Santhana Bhagyam (the blessing of progeny) to devotees. According to another legend, the sage Parashurama is said to have advised the Tantris (priests) at the site where the temple now stands. Ashtami Rohini festival in Chinga Masam is another significant celebration at this temple.
