The renowned Kunnil Sree Dharma Sastha Temple was once located in Alangadu, a region with special significance to the Sabarimala temple. The areas of Ayiroor, Chengamanadu, Parakadavu, and Kothakulangara were all part of Alangadu. The Chomaya Mangalathu family, landlords under the Azhvanchery Thamprakkal of Thirunavaya, were forced to leave their homeland and settle in Kadungaloor due to invasions. There, they established a Kalari (traditional martial arts training centre) and worshipped Bhadrakali as its presiding deity, later consecrating Shastha as well. Over time, the Kalari and other temple structures were lost. Maintaining ties with their past, the temple’s managing Kartha family continued seeking permission from the Azhvanchery Thamprakkal on
more special occasions until recent times. An astrological consultation later revealed that while the idol of Bhadrakali had been destroyed, her divine presence remained. As a result, Bhadrakali was re-consecrated as Kaloorikaamoorthy.
