Panayil Ganapathy Temple

History

This temple is at Aaryankuzhi in Thiruvananthapuram district. It was full of fields and coconut groves at one time. At that time there was a canal in the place of the road. The people staying in a house close to the Pana, field, used to worship Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, Yogeeswaran, Maatan Thampuran, Yakshiyamma, Mutharamma, Manthramoorthy and Brahmarakshas. They used to perform Ponkala once a year. The deities gained more power as time passed and on the day of the festival, the eldest male member of the family was infused by the power of the deities. He would then pronounce remedies for the difficulties experienced by the devotees in more the neighbourhood. About 150 years ago, Narayana Panikkar, the eldest member then, received special blessings from Yogeeswaran. He was instructed by an unseen power to have Ganapathy consecrated there. He went on a pilgrimage to the north and received an idol of Balaganapathy. He came back and consecrated that idol in the Pana. As in the Pana, the temple became known as Panayil Sree Maha Ganapathy temple. Once when the eldest member was in a frenzy after the effulgance of the deity had entered him, the devotees asked for the performance of Ponkala. He replied that he would wear the heated elephant chain as the holy thread and perform it. The next day he did so. Many people fainted on seeing this. So, it was decided that it need not be performed again. Balaganapathy had been consecrated on a platform made with mud. Later it was transferred to a small sanctum. It was much later that the temple was built. As the temple was at a lower level it was difficult to offer pujas during the rainy season. So, after astrological consultations a new consecration was performed and Nagaraja and Nagayakshi were also consecrated. In 2015, Matan Thampuran was also consecrated.
