Triprangode Siva Temple

History

Sree Triprangode Lord Siva Temple, mentioned in many of the Puranas, is situated in Triprangode Panchayath of Tirur Taluk. The temple is within 8 km from the Tirur Railway station and 5 km from Thirunavaya. This is one of the three very famous temples here, the other two being Aalathiyoor Hanuman and Chamravattom Ayyappan. The origin of this temple is connected with the legend of Lord Siva saving Markandeya from death. Markandeya, a great devotee of Lord Siva, was destined to die at the age of sixteen. On that day as he saw Yama, the lord of death approaching him, the boy ran to Lord Mukunda more at Thirunavaya. But he was instructed to approach Sree Mahadeva at Triprangode. As Markandeya ran for his life followed by Yama a banyan tree is said to have split itself to make it easy for the boy to reach the Lord. The boy embraced the Lord to save his life. Yama threw his rope to tie the boy up but the rope went around the idol of Lord Siva. Enraged by this Lord Siva killed Yama and saved Markandeya. The Lord then washed himself and his weapon in the pond on the southern side and enshrined himself in the present Sanctum Sanctorum. As the Lord is believed to have taken three steps after killing Yama Siva Lingas are consecrated at three places in the temple. A Brahmin boy saw the Lord washing himself in the pond and offered his help. The Lord accepted his help and instructed him to perform Abhishekam (pouring water on the deity) in the Sanctum Sanctorum using a conch. The descendants of the boy belonging to Kalpuzha Namboothiri family became the Thanthris (chief priests) of the temple. The temple was managed by the Vettath Royal family and later by the Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode. Even today the Zamorin Raja is the chief trustee of the temple. In the two storied Sanctum Sanctorum, Lord Siva is consecrated facing west as the presiding deity. All the parts essential for a temple are present here like Nalambalam, Balikkal Pura, Aanapanthal, Gopuram, Chuttumathil etc. Lord Ganapathy, Sree Parvathy, Vrushabha, Sastha, Gosala Krishnan, Bhadraka Kali and Vettekkorumakan are also consecrated in the temple as sub deities. One of the most important offerings here is to perform Sayana Pradakshinam (circumambulating the temple by rolling on the ground) without touching the idol of Siva who is seen with his foot on the body of Apasmara Yakshi during Sivarathri. Other offerings are Mruthunjaya Homam, Sankabhishekam (pouring water on the idol using the conch), Dhara (pouring a specified number of pots of water on the idol), Umamaheswara Pooja, Navagraha Pooja and offering a small replica of a child in a cradle for being blessed with a child. The important festivals in the temple are three days festival in connection with Sivarathri and another festival that concludes with arattu on star Thiruvathira in the month of Dhanu. Apart from these Ashtamirohini, consecration day on star Punartham in the month of Midhunam, Nira (freshly harvested rice stalks being brought to the temple) on the Sunday after the no-moon day in Karkidakam and Puthari (making an offering to the Lord using the new rice) on the star Utradam in the month of Chingam are also celebrated here.
