Sree Kanjilassery Mahasiva Temple

History

This temple is at Kanjilassery about 2km east of Pookkad on Kozhikode Koyilandi National Highway. It is believed to be more than 5000 years old. Sage Kashyapa is believed to have consecrated the idol of Kanjilassery. It is the form of Siva, that remained fierce during and after the Daksha Yaga, known as Rudra roopa that is consecrated here. It is said that consecration at four places, Kashi, Kancheepuram, Kaanjarangad and Kanjilassry were carried out simultaneously. The legend says that the Sage performed the consecrations at the first three places and reached Kanjilassery. He had a doubt whether the auspicious time for the consecration was over more by then. There came a voice that said that the time was not over and hence he performed the consecration after replying to the voice.  The two words in Malayalam, Kazhinjilla and shari (‘time is not over’ and ‘all right’) were put together to make the name of the place, Kazhinjillassery and later Kanjilassery. Ganapathy, Devi, Paradevatha, Vishnu and Ayyappan were the subordinate deities. Later Ayyappan was consecrated in a separate sanctum outside the temple. Ganapathy and Devi were blessed inside the temple premises. Paradevatha on the path for circumambulation got all the offerings before they reached Lord Siva. The Lord became angry and threw Paradevatha out, holding him by the ear (kunni ). Paradevatha remained where he had fallen and his presence was felt at that place. This place came to be known as Kunnimatam. There is a Paradevatha temple at Kunnimatam even today. Vishnu was present in this Siva temple as Narasimhamoorthy. However, it was revealed that Viishnu wanted a separate temple. So, a temple was built and Narsimha was taken from the Siva temple and consecrated there. But at another astrological consultation it was proved that instead of Narasimhamoorthy, it was the Gopalamoorthy of Vishnu that had been transferred to the new temple. So Narasimhamoorthy remains at the Siva temple. The new temple became Kanjilassery Sree Krishna temple. It is believed that all attempts to destroy the temple proved unsuccessful during the invasion by the army of Tippu Sultan. Even today, devotees do not enter the inner court of the temple. This is a Mahakshetharm with a square sanctum. There is a Namaskara mandapam in front with Ashtadikpalakar around it. In the same direction are the subordinate deities, inner courtyard, Balikalpura, Balikallu, flagpost, Deepasthambham (pedestal for many lamps), temple pond and the ornate outer gate. The pond is meant to control the anger that may emanate from the fierce form of the Lord. This unique pond has innumerable corners and steps. Under the pond can be seen the underground well also.
