Palliamburam Mahadeva Temple

History

The Palliyamburam Sree Mahadeva Kshetram is believed to be one of the Shiva temples consecrated by Lord Parashurama. This ancient temple is unique in that it has no consecration of minor deities. The Lord here is consecrated in the most powerful aspect and it is believed that Mahadeva will grant all prosperity to those who worship in this temple. The Palliyamburam Sree Mahadeva temple is situated 1½ km away to the North of Sree Ramaswamy temple of Ramapuram, facing the Ramapuram - Koothattukulam road. This is one of the famous 108 Shiva temples. The Moola Mantra is ‘panchakshari’. The absence of idols of Upadevatas is more the peculiarity of this temple.  The Sree kovil is square, Darshanam (facing) is towards the east. Daily 3 poojas are performed. The temple was looted and destroyed during the military invasion by Tippu Sultan. The Chief Priest of the temple, lay embracing the idol, reciting the Panchakshari Manthra, to protect it. The looting soldiers attacked the priest with their swords and inflicted wounds on his body. There is still the mark of a cut on the idol which is believed to have been caused at that time. It is also believed that the effulgence of the priest who was killed, merged with the idol as Rakshas. Later during the renovation of the temple, the Rakshas was consecrated within the temple compound. Yakshiyamma and the Nagas were also consecrated in separate sancta sanctorum.  As directed by the astrological consultation held in the temple, a Golaka made of the five sacred metals was offered.  The work of constructing an auditorium and other amenities for the devotees who visit the temple is nearing completion. This temple is one of the resting places for the pilgrims to the Sabarimala temple. The annual festival is held in the month of Dhanu with the final Aarattu falling on the day of star Thiruvathira. Some of the important offerings here include Ashtabhishekam on the day of Pradosham and the special Dhara on the day of star Thiruvathira. Pithru Tharpanam, for offering obeisance to the ancestors, is conducted on all days except for the period of the festival. Sri.Narayanan Namboothiri of the Kuruppakkattu Illam is the Thanthri of the temple. Muralidharan Namboothiri is the chief priest. The temple is managed by the N.S.S. Karayogam with a Managing Committee of Sri.V.R.Rajendran Nair (President), K.B.Anil Kumar (Secretary), N.Mohanan Nair (Treasurer), Radhakrishnan.
