Chundayil Kadankottu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Chundayil Kadankottu Valappil Chuzhali Bhagavathy Temple is dedicated to Goddess Chuzhali Bhagavathy, a manifestation of Durga. The village derives its name from the goddess, her divine abode. Historically, the region was ruled by the Chuzhali Nambiars, a prominent dynasty that controlled the area known as Chuzhali Swaroopam, which extended up to Koorgu in present-day Karnataka. The Malabar Manual by William Logan describes Chuzhali as an ideal location for guerrilla warfare, with its mainland surrounded by high-altitude areas such as Kulathur, Thalakkulam, Edakkulm, and Kuunam. This strategic advantage played a key role during the resistance against the British. One of the notable figures from this region was Chuzhali more Nambiar, a commander in Pazhassiraja’s guerrilla army. It is believed that Pazhassiraja himself visited Chuzhali during his struggle against British colonial forces. Tragically, Chuzhali Nambiar was captured by the British and executed by hanging in Thalassery, marking a significant chapter in the region's history of resistance.
