History

Kaimakunnath Kavu Bhagavathi Temple, located in Mannur, Palakkad district, Kerala, is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the region. Mannur holds significant historical importance, and the temple is a spiritual beacon for the local community. The presiding deity, Kaimakunnathu Bhagavathi, is regarded as the protector and guardian of the land, showering blessings upon its people. One of the temple's unique features is its famous Vela festival, which is notable for the absence of elephants. Instead, each Desam (local community) showcases their devotion by bringing Kala or Kuthira figures crafted from straw and adorned with white or colourful fabrics, decorative papers, and lights. Temple more is also renowned for its Tholpavakoothu, a traditional shadow puppetry performance using leather puppets, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. This ancient art form is an integral ritual of the temple, adding to its cultural significance.
