Arakkulam Sree Dharma Sastha Temple

History

Arakkulam Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, located in Idukki, is steeped in legend and spiritual significance. According to tradition, one of the early priests of the renowned Sree Sabarimala Dharma Sastha Temple hailed from Karott Madam. As the priest aged, he found it increasingly difficult to undertake the arduous trek to Sabarimala to perform his sacred duties. Devoutly seeking the Lord's guidance, the priest prayed for divine intervention. One night, Lord Dharma Sastha appeared to him in a dream, blessing him with the assurance that His presence would manifest in the courtyard of the priest’s ancestral home (Illam). The more next morning, the priest discovered an arrow firmly embedded in the ground, standing upright and vibrating with divine energy. Feeling the Lord's presence, the priest consecrated an idol at that very spot and began worshipping it. The temple's sanctum-sanctorum now stands precisely where this miraculous event occurred in the courtyard. The name Arakkulam originates from the unique features of the priest’s Illam, which boasted a large granary (ara) and a pond (kulam), giving the place its distinct identity. Today, Arakkulam Sree Dharma Sastha Temple continues to be a cherished place of devotion, celebrated for its divine origin and historical resonance.
