This temple is at Kaitharam
near North Paravur in Ernakulam district. It is more than 500 years old. The
origin of this temple is connected with an elder male member of a family here
going on a pilgrimage to Kashi. As he was coming back from Kashi, he found a
stone with an attractive shape and appearance. It looked suitable for breaking
the areca nut that was used for chewing with betel leaves. He kept the stone in
the folds of his cloth. As he came to the place where the temple is situated
today, he felt that the stone in the folds of his
more
cloth was getting heavy. He
examined the stone and found that it had attained the form of an idol of a
Goddess. He threw the stone into the dense forest. Years later the presence of
the divine was revealed in an astrological consultation. It was revealed to be
the Bhagavathy from Vazhappilly Mana. It was also shown that the Goddess
desired to remain where the idol was found. So, a temple was constructed and
the idol was consecrated there. In the beginning, pooja was conducted only on
the 10th day of the month of Medam (Pathaamudayam
). Later poojas were conducted every month.
