This ancient temple is very close to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport. The beautiful Jagadamba is consecrated here. Aeons ago, the Goddess did penance at a holy place with sand hills surrounded by the sea on the four sides, on the southwestern side of this land. Shukracharya and his wife Jayanthy who were ardent devotees of the Goddess also sat in penance facing the Goddess. Even after many years, the Goddess did not open her eyes or bless the Acharya and his wife. Shukracharya became angry at this and blew the conch to wake the Goddess from her meditation. When the Goddess opened her eyes, she saw Shukracharya standing
more there with the conch in hand. Hence this place came to be known as Shamgumugham. According to legends, this temple is connected with the famous Padmanabhaswamy temple at Thiruvananthapuram.
