The temple is one of the 108 Durga temples in
Kerala. It is believed to be over 2000 years old. Legend has it that when Parashurama, an avatar of Vishnu, was passing through the area, he
stumbled upon a Divya Tejas (divine radiance). He attempted to consecrate the
Divya Tejas as Siva, Vishnu, Ganapathy, and Subrahmanyan, but his efforts were
in vain. Eventually, he realized that the Divya Tejas was none other than Adi
Parashakti, the primordial energy. He then consecrated her upon a Shila (sacred
stone). The Tejas entered the Shila, giving rise to a Swayambhu Murti
(self-manifested idol). You can also find
