Mangottukavu Bhagavathy Temple
enshrines Vaishnavi, one of the seven mother goddesses. It situates in the
tharur panchayath of the Alathur taluk. The idol of the goddess is about six
feet tall. Hundreds of years age when the Mannadiar Community went to Mangode
near the town of the Cherpulassery for the trade, the goddess is supposed to
have accompanied one of them along with traditional palm leaf umbrella
(Olakkuda) while they were coming back. Thus, the rights of the upkeep of the
temple belong to the community. As it became a financial burden to the
community, the right was later on handed over to the landlords of
more
Poomuli Mana.
Now the administration is under the control of H.R&C.E. department,
Government. of Kerala. Thousands of devotees from various place come to the
temple for worship and thereby acquire prosperity in life. Based on the revenue
it brings to the H.R&C.E., this temple is considered to be a Special Grade
temple. Regular pooja is performed in the temple from 5 a.m. to 11 am and on
Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 5 am to 12 pm and in the evening 5 pm to 8
pm. A Vela festival is held every year
in the Malayalam month of medam. Renovation of the temple was done in 2004 in
the month of Edavam and after that every year in the month of Edavam on the day
of star Chitra, a 10-day festival is held with Chanthattam and tantric rituals.
This is done by the temple devaswom. Besides, every year Veda Laksharchana,
Navarathri festival and Mandala Vilakku for 41 days are held. The whole month
of Karkkatakam, Navabhishekam and Panchagavyam are conducted. Sub deities like
Adi Ganapathy Vigneswara and Sastha are also enshrined in the temple. Outside
the temple, the main attendants of the goddess Mookken Chathan is positioned.
The poojas performed here do not belong to the pure and traditional style. They
are performed by people belonging to the Mannadiar Community, those of Kottayil
veedu. Devotees come for poojas on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The temple
traditionally belongs to Poomuli Mana. The present fit person is Paremeswaran
Namboodiripad. Tantric rites are performed by Andaladi Sankaran Namboodiripad
and the chief priest is A. N. Siva Subramanya Iyer. Kottayil Gangadhara
Mannadiar performs poojas for the guarding deity to the temple, Mookken
Chathan. The day to day administration is carried out by the devaswom executive
officer appointed by the H.R&C.E. department.
