History

Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, located in the heart of Erumely town in Kottayam district, Kerala, is a prominent Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, also known as Dharmasastha. This temple serves as a significant gathering point for pilgrims en route to Sabarimala. Erumely is home to the Valiyambalam (the main temple) and the Kochambalam (the smaller temple), situated within 0.5 kilometres of each other. The renowned Erumely Pettathullal, a ceremonial dance performed as part of the Sabarimala pilgrimage, is celebrated near both temples. Additionally, the Erumely Vavar Masjid, symbolizing communal harmony, is nearby. The temple provides essential facilities for pilgrims, including accommodation, food, and water, managed by more the Travancore Devaswom Board. The Tazhmon Mutt holds the traditional tantric rights for performing rituals at the temple.
