Thazhath Neelamana Illam

History

Thazhath Neelamana Illam is one of the ancient Brahmin families of Payyanur, located in Varikkachal, Perool, about 15 kilometres northeast of Payyanur. The main deity worshipped here is Dhoomabhagavathy, which has offerings of Gurusi/Guruthi, and the Sreechakram is also considered sacred. Thazhath Neelamana Illam is one of the oldest families of its kind and was devastated during Tipu Sultan's invasion. Many ancestors fled to Travancore and other regions, and only one survived after Tipu's forces killed many. Despite being landlords, the family struggled with poverty for years. During the invasion, the sword of one of the main deities, 'Panchuruli,' was destroyed, and the Santhanagopalakrishnan, Salagram, and valuable more Sreechakram were lost. In later years, a Swarna Prashna was conducted at the Illam to identify flaws and perform remedies through poojas. Eventually, the Sreechakram was returned to the Illam, where it is now carefully preserved, and daily poojas are performed. 'Panchuruli' is considered the main deity, and Theyyam is performed in honour of the deity every year.
