This temple is at Muppathadam in Aluva of Ernakulam district. Muthukadu was a forest area where many ascetics lived. It was believed to be a sacred land frequented by the Yakshas and Gandharvas. Many centuries ago an ascetic who came here had an idol of the Goddess whom he had long been worshipping. As he came here a voice told him to consecrate it there. The Goddess who had returned to Kailas after the killing of Darika was instructed by Lord Siva to come to bless Muthukadu in her presence. According to another legend, a big temple of Siva was destroyed in an attack by
more an army. The priest in the Siva temple wanted to save the idol which innumerable ablutions and poojas had sanctified. So, he took the idol and came to the temple of Muthukadilamma. Seeing that the place was suitable, the Brahmin priest also consecrated the idol of Siva.
