Vazhalikkavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

The temple is situated at Panjaal village in Painkulam panchayath in Trichur district. There are two main sancta, one for Bhadrakali, facing north and the other for Naavrambilamma facing west. There are two flag posts also one in front of each of the consecrations. Legend holds that Bhadrakali came out of the eye of Lord Parameshwara to destroy Darika. After killing Darika she is believed to have rested on a banana tree at Vazhaalikaavu. There were many banyan trees also in that area which together gave it the name of Vazhaalikaavu (Vaazha – Banana tree and aalu the Banyan tree in Malayalam.) The idol at more this temple is a four-foot granite one depicted with four arms, carrying the spear, sword, the severed head of Darika and the pot. Though it is a fierce form, the Goddess is calm here as the sanctum is open to the sky allowing the sun and rain water to fall on the idol. The sanctum faces the river which also makes the Goddess remain cool. Naavambrilamma is considered as the daughter of the Goddess. It is said that the deity was floating in the waters of the river when she was rescued by Bhadrakali and consecrated next to her. Both the deities are given equal importance. There are two oracles and they make revelations every day which is not done in any other temple. There is a speciality in the Koothambalam being in front of the sanctum. The puppet show depicting the battle between Rama and Ravana is performed here during the festival as it is believed to have been invented by Maheswara for Bhadrakali who could not see the original war. The temple belongs to Kootalaattupuram mana and the devotees join in maintaining the temple in an exemplary manner.
