History

Madavoor Sree Mahadeva Temple, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is an ancient and revered Shiva temple with a history spanning over 1,000 years. Renowned for its serene atmosphere and stunning architecture, the temple is home to the perpetual lamp, symbolising the eternal divine presence as it remains continuously lit. Visitors are prohibited from taking photographs inside, ensuring the sanctity of the sacred space. A majestic Banyan tree with a rounded seating area and a swing (oonjal) hanging from its branches create a tranquil setting at the main entrance. The temple’s architecture showcases Kerala's ancient building traditions, with intricate carvings and sculptures, while the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) more houses a unique arrangement of Lord Ganapathi inside and Lord Vishnu outside. A key annual event is the Aayilyam Oott, a sacred feast dedicated to the Nagas (snake gods), held during the Aayilyam of the Malayalam month of Kanni.
