Sree Umamaheswara Swami temple

History

Sree Uma Maheswara Temple situated at the heart of Kollam town is the only temple in Kerala facing the north with Kailasanathan (Lord Siva) in his married form as the principal deity. This century-old temple is a rare temple with Lord Siva and Parvathy seen together on the same pedestal and located in the heart of Kollam town. The main entrance of the temple is near the Royal Highway.  At the entrance, there are Ganapathi, Sree Murugan and Nandikesan installed here as sub-deities. The Lord’s security ‘Madan Thampuran’ protects devotees from all dangers. The Lord is easily pleased. From the Peak of Kailasa Mountain Uma Maheswara more travelled to Agastya Mountain in the North passing through dense forests, hills and streams and reached the ancient city of Kollam.  After seeing the beautiful gardens, palace and Royal Highways of Kollam the Lord told Devi that ‘a person who visits Kollam will desert his Illam.’ Seeing the beauty of the place the Devi wished to spend the night there. They decided to rest under a banyan tree which was in the middle of the town.  Near to the banyan tree, at the foot of which Lord Siva and Parvathy took a rest, a lot of artisans well versed in arts, Vasthu Sasthra and sculpture lived. The residence of Venkiteswaran, the fort artisan was also there. Venkiteswaran had a dream in which he was directed to construct a temple for Uma Maheswaran at this place. When Shree Parameswar reigns with Goddess Parvathy, it turns out to be most holy and provides devotees with everything that is prayed for. Goddess Parvathy is the mother goddess and is the solace to devotees. For Uma Maheswara, there is no difference in caste and creed among devotees. During the rule of kings, they prayed to Uma Maheswara for everything including all round prosperity, long life and blessings. Through Swayamvara Archana, Iswarya Pooja, Uma Maheswara Pooja and Ganapathi Homam, problems in the horoscope and obstacles in getting good alliance can be solved. For misunderstanding between couples Samvada Sooktha Manthra Pushpanjali is held and it solves all problems. Childless couples will get children by performing the Pooja Santhana Gopala Pushpanjali on Pournami day. There are a lot of people who have benefitted from the Poojas and offerings at this temple. Every year Akshaya Thritheeya is observed here. ‘Akshaya Thriteeya’ is celebrated as the most auspicious day in the Uma Maheswara temple at Kollam. It is also believed that it is the marriage day of Kollam Sree Uma Maheswara Swami. Silver and gold coins are available at the temple on that day. Devotees believe that the possession of these coins brings prosperity. Holy divine pooja is also performed.  Another important festival of this temple is Pongaala. People from all over the state take part in this offering. On the star Thiruvathira in the month of Dhanu, Manjal Para, Ellupara etc are the other important offerings in the temple. During the Mandala season, Chirappu is conducted for a continuous period of 61 days. On the day of Sivarathry, Sivarathry fasting is also conducted.
