Vazhappully Sree Rajarajeswary Temple is the first and foremost among the family temples in Kerala. In the Guruvayoor - Kodungalloor route of N.H. 17, 1 km west of Edamuttam Centre stands this famous temple. This is the only temple in Kerala where the remedial religious rites for 'Gandharva Doshas' are done. Regarding the origin of the temple, there is a story. 700 years ago, there lived a mother and son who were the disciples of a goddess in a village under the territory of the Cochin King. One day a monk came to their house. To entertain the guest the family quickly took
more one tender coconut from the nearest coconut tree and gave it to the monk to drink. Later they found the coconut tree was not in their eligible land. They feared that if the king knew about this they would be severely punished. The Goddess they worship came in their dream that night and told the son to go to Kodungalloor or he will be beheaded by the King. During the same night itself, the mother and son started their journey to the north as per the goddess' command through the dream. After a long journey,y they reached Kodungalloor Temple when the Kodungalloor Devi was trembling in a possessed person. When they told their sad story to the Devi, she advised them to go further north. They walked as per the command of Kodungalloor Devi and reached the place called Vazhappully and installed an idol and started worshipping it and gradually it came to be known as Vazhappully Tharavadu. Guru Muthappan who constructed the temple was a priest, celibate and great sage. With a long period of prayer and poojas, he strengthened the Devi. The Goddess in the temple was adored by the Aadi Muthappan and other old persons who came from Cochin. Despite Savarna Medhavithwam (privileges for the upper cast), the Vazhappully Rajarajeswary temple was the only temple where all casts, especially casts below ezhavas, were allowed to worship the Goddess. After 300 years the temple was renovated and the Bhadrakali with Sri Raja Rajeswary Devi was reinstalled by Sri. Narasimha Swamikal the first disciple of Sri Narayana Guru. The Kalyana mandapa attached to this temple constructed by Vazhapully family members functions only at social service. Vimana Gandharva Pooja: At 12:30 am. on the 10th of Makaram month every year, there is a Vimana Gandarva pooja. Years ago, Vazhappully Kunjavunni Muthappan prayed and meditated on the King of Gandharvas and brought before his eyes the Vimana Gandharva, the King of Gandharvas and gave him a place in this temple. Vazhappully Sri Raja Rajeswary temple is the only temple where Gandharva is given a place and adored. Lots of ladies suffering from Gandharva dosha attain permanent relief from this temple. Irrespective of caste and creed, all can take part in Vimana Gandharva pooja with seven days prior abstinence (Vrithanushtanam) to get a cure from Gandharva Dosha. Rs. 101/ - for Gandharva Pooja.
