Thiruvizha Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple is situated at Thiruvizha, around 5 km south of Cherthala and one and a half km to the west of the National Highway. The main deity is Mahdeva as Thiruneelakandan. This place was a swampy forest area in ancient times. Many tribals of the Ullada community used to live here. They used to catch tortoises from here and use them as food. The place where the temple stands today was a pond at that time. Once a woman put her sharp metal stick into the pond to catch the tortoise. But to her dismay blood started gushing out of the place where she more had stuck her stick. She informed the Arakkal Panikkar family about the incident. People gathered and tried to dry the pond to see what was happening. But the water still remained in the pond even after they had tried to dry it for three days. But they could see an elongated stone with blood flowing out of it. A Yogi came there at that time. He told them that it was a self -originated Sivalinga. He advised them not to try to get to the bottom of the stone. He applied some ash on the stone and the flow of blood stopped. Under the instructions given by this holy man the people covered the pond without covering the idol and constructed the temple there. Even now the sanctum gets inundated during the rainy season and then the priests sit at a higher level and offer pujas. Kottarathil Shankunni has mentioned the origin of this temple and about a special medicine given from here that is believed to be effective against the evil effects caused by sorcery.
