This ancient temple is situated at the eastern
part of Kanoli Canal in Chavakad, about 2 km west of the famous
Guruvayoor Sree Krishna temple. The origin of the Bhagavathy is traced to the Kodungalloor
temple. A Brahmin on the way back from worshipping the Bhagavathy at Kodungalloor is believed to have rested near the pond. As his umbrella became rooted at the
spot he called out and two people came there. The three of them together
consecrated the Goddess near the pond. According to another legend, there was a
Goddess consecrated under a Pala tree and it was then transferred to this
place.

As special pujas are performed even today under the Pala tree and near
the pond on the consecration day, people believe in these legends. Goddess
Saraswathy, Shastha, Hanuman, Nagas and Rakshas are the subordinate deities.
According to astrological revelations, the temple is ancient and has undergone
many renovations to come to its present state. The temple rights were given to
the Punnathoor swaroopam. As the Swaroopam is no longer in power, a managing
committee of the local people, with one representative from the Swaroopam in
it, is managing the affairs of the temple.
