Malamakkavu Sree Ayyappa Temple

History

Malamakkavu Sree Ayyappa Temple, also known as Malamelkkavu or Malamalkkavu, is situated in Anakkara village, Palakkad district, Kerala. According to legend, the temple's origins trace back hundreds of years when a Cherumi couple discovered a divine rock while grazing their livestock in the forest. Striking the rock with a sickle caused it to bleed, revealing its divine nature. News of this miraculous event spread and the deity was formally enshrined in a specially built sanctum. Over time, a small temple (Kavu) was established around the idol. Although no detailed historical records exist to confirm the temple's exact age, written evidence indicates that it is over 300 more years old. The Malamakkavu Sree Ayyappa Temple holds special significance as one of the 108 Ayyappa temples mentioned in the Thottam Pattu, an ancient narrative detailing these sacred sites. The temple is also renowned for the Neelathamara flower, which blooms in its pond, adding to its spiritual and cultural significance.
