Sree Poornathrayesa temple, Tripunithura. This famous temple, one of the eight temples of the former kingdom of Kochi, is situated at Tripunithura, Kochi, the capital of the erstwhile Cochin dynasty. Lord Vishnu as Santhaanagopalamoorthy is consecrated here. Legend says that the idol was given to Arjuna, the Pandava by Lord Krishna when he had gone in search of the ten sons of a brahmin who had died at birth. As the idol was kept in the chariot while Arjuna handed over the children to the brahmin, the sanctum is constructed in the form of a chariot. Lord Ganapathy who had been deputed to find a
more suitable place for the consecration of the idol seated himself inside the sanctum. Hence Lord Ganesha also is inside the sanctum but on the southern side. Many festivals are celebrated in this temple. One unique festival is called the Ambalam Kathiya ulsavam which is associated with the time when the temple was burnt down. Vrischikolsavam held in November – December is the main festival. Apart from this the birthday of Sree Poornathrayeesha is celebrated on the star Uthram in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. In August – September there is Mooshari ulsavam in commemoration of the sculptor who moulded the idol of the Lord and merged himself into it.
