Manakkattu Sreebhadra Temple

History

Manakkattu Sree Bhadra Temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali as "Manakkattuamma," is located in Chirakkadavu village near Ponkunnam in Kerala's Kottayam district. The temple’s current structure dates to the early 19th century and its origins are linked to a local saint from the Thaingannoor family, who was known for controlling supernatural beings such as Yakshis and Gandharvas. According to legend, a Yakshi whom the saint had bound in an idol pleaded to be released and promised to accompany him peacefully. The saint brought her to his home but placed a magical thread around her as a precaution. In return, she demanded certain conditions: the central room, or Arapura, more was to be maintained as a shrine, entry required bathing and lower-caste people could not enter past the Padippura. However, when a labourer accidentally touched the saint inside the Padippura, the Yakshi broke free and unleashed misfortunes, including contagious diseases. Desperate, the saint and local leaders sought help from the Karanavar of Manakkattu Mana, who advised building a temple for Bhadrakali. Following his instructions, they constructed a small shrine, consecrated by the Karanavar with a Kannadibhimbam idol, invoking the goddess’s power. Rituals were established to keep the village protected, including the guruthi ceremony every twelve years to prevent further misfortunes.
