The Sreekanteswara Temple is located at the heart of Calicut City, consecrated by Great Sree Narayana Guru in 1910, and has been a centre of attraction for thousands of devotees for attaining spiritual and mental peace. Lord Siva is the main deity with Upadevathas viz. Sree Subramanya, Navagrahas, Ganapathy, Sasthavu, Lord Vishnu and Devi. Sree Subramanya idol is in the same measure as that of the temple at Palani and is designed according to the swapnadharsanam acknowledged by the Poojari. So, it is believed that by worshiping this Sree Subramanya provides same effect to the devotees as that of darshan at Palani and so
more many devotees get cured from their diseases and relief from mental tensions by means of poojas and prayers. A Sivalinga of immemorial period is also consecrated within the sanctum for worship. An important feature of this temple is the freedom for all people without considering religion, caste or creed to do prayers and conduct poojas as per the temple rituals. Pushpanjali, Udayasthamaya Pooja, Abhishekhas and Havanas are the main poojas of the temple. But Shradhas, Bhalitharpanas and Thilahavanam are also performed on request of the devotees. Saswatha Pooja on birthday every year, for the lifetime of the devotees with intimation about birthday and Prasadham, on single payment is another specialty. Payasam, Unniyappam, Thrimadhuram, etc. are prasadhams of this temple. Eight-day long Sivarathri is the main celebration and along with it Vinayaka Chathurthi, Navarathri, Guruvayoor Ekadasi, Thaipooyam, Karthika vilakku, Ayyappa Pooja, Skanda shashti, Elaneerattom, etc are celebrated with the participation of thousands of devotees every year. This temple is the epitome of the philosophy of Great Sree Narayana Guru – “blending of social reforms with spirituality”. For the fulfillment of this objective the temple is organizing so many socio-cultural activities with the whole-hearted support and participation of devotees and other philanthropists. Educational Scholarships for students, School Uniform distribution, Sanskrit class, Vedantha Study Class, Annadhanam, etc. are some among them. For effective delivery of these services the temple manages certain institutions viz. Library with ancient reference books, Working Women’s Hostel, English Medium School, Sree Narayana Centenary Memorial Hall (AC hall with 1200 persons capacity), Shobhana Memorial Hall (200 persons capacity), Cultural Centre, etc. The temple is managed by an elected committee under the leadership of Sri.P V Chandran, Managing Editor, the Mathrubhumi daily, with Sri.
