Namborkavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

This famous Bhagavathi Temple is situated at Arimpur Panchayath in Thrissur District, eight Kilometers west of NH. 47 and sixteen Kilometers east of NH 17. The main deity is the Goddess Bhadrakali. Bhadrakali is often known as the symbol of Sakthi. (The Power and Energy) Six Nambidi families are the Ooralans (Owners) of this temple. One of the eldest members of this Ooralans went for a long pilgrimage and on the way in a thick forest at night, unable to find his way out, he prayed for the help of Sakthi. The Goddess appeared before him in a luminous form and helped him more to come out of the forest. When he returned and reached his homeland, he experienced the presence of Bhadrakali with him and he decided to worship Sakthi at Nadumuttom. (In the old families of Brahmins in Kerala, the central part of their houses, a portion is left open without a roof to get rain and sun) Thanthri of this temple is the famous Brahmin family Pazhanga Parambu Mana. The village where this temple is situated is known as Arimbur though it is believed that it was originally Aripuram. This name comes from the legend that in the olden days, rice, instead of paddy, used to appear on the spikes in the fields of this village. The powerful Goddess here is famed for granting the ardent prayers of her devotees. Many devotees vouch for this. Many seek Her blessings for marriages. There is a strong belief that if the Arangettam, the first performance, of any art form is held in this temple, the artist is sure to become a successful performer with the blessings of the Goddess. A lot of developments have been done in the temple recently. A new Ganapathi Kovil is constructed. Navagraha Prathishta and Sarpam Prathishta are the other deities. Lord Siva is also worshipped here. Those who reach here to fulfil their desires and to overcome their sorrows are fully satisfied by the grace of the Mother. The renovation of the temple was completed. The most salient feature of the structure is the Nadappura, with the wooden ceiling. Air-conditioned Sree Bhadra Auditorium and Sree Devi Auditorium were completed recently. Devotees are sure that this temple, though small, will soon be one of the most famous temples in Kerala. The important rituals here include Vela on the day of star Bharani in the month of Medam. The installation day is celebrated on Pooyam star in the month of Midhunam. There is Kalamezuthupattu, Niramala and Chuttu Vilakku on all the forty-one days of Mandalam. Desa Vilakku is celebrated on the second Saturday of the month of Vrichikam. Apart from these, there has been Thrikala pooja and Annadanam on the day of star Bharani every month for the last ten years. Navarathri also is celebrated every year.
