History

This temple is situated in the heart of the Palakkad town. The Devi shower blessings on all Her Devotees. The temple flag is hoisted on the 1st Friday of the month of Kumbha and the Vela festival is conducted on the 3rd Thursday of the same month. In ancient times yogas were conducted on the banks of the River Shokanasini and the place came to be known as Yagakara and at present Yakkara. That’s the place where the temple is located. It is believed that the Devi was shifted from the Moolasthana, which was in West Yakkara. The Prathistha is Bhadrakali.  She is in the Shanta more Bhava. She is in her Rowdra Bhava during the Chandattam ceremony and becomes Shanta Swaroopini after accepting the Kadina Payasa Nivedyam. The main offerings of the temple are Kathina Vedi, Chandattam etc. This temple is the Adimakavu of many Brahmins of Kerala. There is a great rush of Brahmins during the months of Karkitakam. The Prathishtha Dinam of the temple is celebrated in the month of Medom during Uthram Nakshatra. At this time Rig Veda Laksharchanas are conducted. The Tanthris are from the Kariannoor Mana. Rig Veda Mantras, Sukta Japams etc. are conducted in the temple. The Temple follows the traditions of the Vela which is different from others. The temple belongs to the famous Kenath family.
