Sree Munikkal Guhalaya Temple

History

Sree Munikkal Guhalaya Temple, located atop a hill in Chengamanad near Aluva, holds both historical and mythological significance. Perched on a 100-foot rocky hill, the temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga (also known as Subramanya Swamy or Guhan), hence the name "Munikkal Guhalayam" - meaning "Cave Temple of Guhan" on the rock of Sage Jangama (Muni). Another interpretation of the name is derived from "Guha," meaning cave. The rock formations on the hill resemble an elephant raising its trunk, adding to the temple's unique natural beauty. The temple also features a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha with a self-manifested (Swayambhoo) idol. The primary deity, Lord Muruga, was consecrated more here in 1898 by Chattambi Swamikal in the presence of Sree Narayana Guru. Devotees gather each month on Shashti day to perform Shashti Vrat observances, especially those seeking blessings for marriage. It is believed that observing the Shashti Vrat here can remove obstacles to marriage. According to legend, Sage Jangama meditated here around 2000 years ago, and the area, originally named Jangaman, became Chengamanad. Later, it was discovered that Lord Shiva’s presence was also felt here, leading to his consecration alongside Lord Muruga in the same sanctum—a rare feature in temples. Another belief holds that Lord Murugan, also called Guhan, made this hill his abode, lending the temple its name, "Guhalayam."
