Sree Athiyaramadom Devi Temple

History

This ancient temple at Vanchiyur, Thiruvananthapuram has a place among Kerala's very ancient and famous temples. The Brahmin family of Athiyaramadom had the duty of conducting the pujas there. One of the men from this family married a girl from Akkaradesham, one division of the Brahmin priests’ family during the rule of the Kings in Travancore and Kochi. He was responsible for conducting poojas in temples from Thiruvattaar to Sharkara of Thiruvananthapuram district. One among them was the Athiyramadom Devi temple and the land that belonged to it. He had the responsibility of the Thanthri in many temples and he used to bring the original consecrations more to Athiyaramadom temple to offer worship. It was known as their Devaram. There is a close connection between the Athiyaramadom Devi temple and Manacaud Sree Dharmashastha temple and many rituals are followed even today. Legend says that the festivals of Aattukaal Devi temple and Mancaud Dharmashastha temple were held simultaneously. More Para offerings were received by the Goddess and this saddened the Lord. So, on the last day after the offering of Pongala the Goddess comes to see her brother, Lord Shastha. The Lord sees the Goddess in the morning and becomes happy. The Lord is taken to Athiyaramadom temple to be invigorated through pujas. Then Lord Shastha goes around on an elephant and accepts Paras from the devotees. It is believed that the Ettara yogam (81/2 Yogam ) that managed the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple in those days consisted of eight Thanthris including that of the Atiyaramadom temple and the Royal family holding ½ power.
