This ancient temple, believed to have been built between 1375 and 1475 is situated at South Chittoor in Ernakulam District. Its origin and history are connected with the family of Cheranelloor Swaroopam. Moopil Narayanan Kartha of this family was an ardent devotee of Sri Krishna. He visited many holy places and settled down at Guruvayoor. When he became the senior member of the family he had to come back to fulfil his official duties. As he prepared to leave Guruvayoor with a troubled mind, the Lord appeared before him in a dream and informed him that He would be travelling with him on his umbrella and
more when he reached home he wold find that the umbrella had got stuck at one place. The Lord directed him to build a temple there. It was at the site of the present temple that the umbrella got fixed. Narayanan Kartha built a small sanctum and a mandapam there. He took an Anjanashila (A special type of stone used for carving idols) and a beautiful idol of Lord Sri Krishna was made. Kartha invited the Thanthri of Guruvayoor, Chennas Namboothiripad to consecrate the idol. It is said that the Thanthri blessed that this temple would be a little below Guruvayoor as Mooppil Kartha had forgotten to give the gold plate in which he had brought the dhanam (money and jewels) to be given to the Thanthri. The Mooppil Kartha family looked after the affairs of the temple for a long time till it was taken over by Rama Varma Maharaja of the Cochin Royal family. Now the temple is under the Cochin Devaswom Board.
