Sree Rama Devaswom Temple, located in Tripunithura, Ernakulam district, Kerala, holds a unique place among the state's Gowda Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community temples. It is the only temple where Lord Sree Rama is the main deity, along with Sita Devi and Lakshmana. The temple's history dates back to when Srimat Raghavendra Tirtha visited Tripunithura and stayed with the Varapuzha family. Pleased with the hospitality, he gifted them a Sree Rama idol he had personally worshipped. The family installed the idol in a small temple on their premises. Later, the Panakkal family of Tripunithura, which has ancestral ties with the Swamiji, requested an idol for their worship. In
more response, the Swamiji blessed them with a Taliyola (palm-leaf manuscript) of the Bhagavatham, declaring it to hold the presence of the Lord. Around 1658 AD, the Varapuzha and Panakkal families offered the Rama idol and the holy manuscript to the GSB community in Tripunithura for public worship. With land donated by the Thamarassery Naicken family, a new temple was built, and the idol and manuscript were installed. The temple was later renovated, with a reinstallation (puna-prathishta) in 1895 AD. During the Portuguese attack on the Cochin Thirumala Devaswom Temple in 1662 AD, the GSB community relocated the idol of Lord Venkateswara and other deities from Cochin to Udayamperur for safekeeping. After the Dutch defeated the Portuguese in 1663 AD, the idols were returned to Cochin. On the way back, the procession deity of Lord Venkateswara was temporarily placed for worship at the Agrasala of the Tripunithura Sree Rama temple. Sri Hari Shenoy, then Manager of the Cochin Thirumala Devaswom, had a vision in which Lord Venkateswara instructed that the idol be installed at the newly constructed Karanakodam temple. The idol was then taken in a grand procession and installed at Karanakodam as per the divine directive. By the early 20th century, the Tripunithura temple fell into disrepair and financial difficulty. In 1940 AD, the Maharaja of Cochin ordered the Tripunithura Devaswom Board to take over its administration. After a legal battle, the temple was returned to the GSB community in 1961 AD. The original Bhagavatham manuscript, preserved in a copper box in the sanctum sanctorum, deteriorated over time. In 1979 AD, Srimat Sudheendra Tirtha Swamiji blessed the temple with a new Ramayana book, which was placed in the sanctum as a replacement. During the temple’s annual festivals, a ceremonial procession begins from the Varapuzha family home, honouring their contribution of the Sree Rama idol to the temple.
