There was a small village consisting of Paaliyekkara, Mannankarachira, Muthoor, Kizhakkan Muthoor and Chumathra. History says that the name Patappat came from the word denoting the place of the temples. There was an ancient temple for the very powerful Goddess Durga at this place. This Goddess was the presiding deity of Thiruvalla Kaviyoor. Legend says that the Pandavas and Draupadi had stayed in the forest here during their exile, and the footprint left by Bhima on the Thrikkakkutippara still exists. This place was inhabited by great sages who offered penance. According to some of the ancient parchments available, Hanuman is believed to have come here and dug the
more very deep pond of the temple. The temple's remains lay in the deep jungle for a long time. Many of the valuable things of the temple were put in a well in the temple. The main Goddess consecrated now is Vanadurga. It is believed that the hunters who lived in the forest used to worship a mound in the shape of a Goddess. Later when Vilwamangalath Swamiyar arrived there the Goddess appeared before him and he consecrated the mild form of the Goddess.
