Poykkattussery is a picturesque village blessed by the presence of the Mangampilly Thevarnada Sree Maha Vishnu Temple, located in Chengamanadu. The temple's primary deity is Lord Mahavishnu, who is depicted holding a conch, chakra, mace, and lotus. In addition to the main deity, the temple also houses Ganapathi, Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, Nagaraja, Brahmakashas, and Panchamahamurthy installations. One of the temple's most celebrated occasions is the Dasavatharam Chandanam Charthu (sandalwood offering) held during the month of Vaishakha. Another significant event is the Mahannadanam and the reading of the Narayaneeyam on Thiruvonam day, where mass worship brings together a large number of devotees. In the past, the temple faced alienation
more by other religious groups, but it was later reclaimed. During the clearing of the overgrown area surrounding the temple, the sandals of Lord Vishnu were discovered, which became central to worship for several decades. According to the village elders, this discovery was significant in reestablishing the temple's sanctity. Later, the idol of Lord Vishnu was consecrated following a Thamboola prashnam, which provided clarity on the temple's history and future. However, during the invasions of Tippu Sultan, the temple suffered greatly. The chief priest was brutally killed, and the main idol was destroyed during the attack. Despite these challenges, the temple's history and spiritual significance continue to resonate with the community today.
