This temple is at Cheppanam near Vyttila in Ernakulam. Legend says that a woman named Kotha was cutting grass when her sickle hit a stone. On examination, she thought that it was a Sivalinga and informed the local people. On astrological consultation, the effulgence of Siva was found in that area and a temple was built. As Kotha had discovered it the place came to be known as Kotheswaram. It was neglected after some time. Years later someone, during meditation, found the presence of the effulgence in a place overgrown with vegetation. The Sivalinga was found and the
more present temple was built.
