Sree Neerputhoor Siva Temple

History

Methrukovil Neerputhoor Siva Temple. This ancient temple, believed to be more than 3000 years old, is on the road connecting Perunthalmanna and Palaghat. Despite its antiquity, the temple structure remains intact. Legend says that Lord Paramasiva was pleased with the austerity of a Yatheeswara and appeared before him as Mruthyunjaya with Goddess Parvathy and Goddess Ganga. The Yatheeswara spent the rest of his life worshipping Lord Siva. When he realised that his life was going to end, he consecrated the effulgence of Siva, Parvathy and Ganga at this spot and merged with the deity himself.  Later on, the Brahmins of that place realised the presence of more the effulgence and started worshipping there. The ruler of the area built the beautiful temple. The Balikkalpura and the sanctum are surrounded by water.  This is so not when there is heavy rain. It is always filled with water. This is the only temple that has this special feature. The stream of water originates from the sanctum. Devotees believe this to be the holy Ganga that comes from the Siva linga. Lord Siva, as Mruthyunjaya remains in the meditative pose in the sanctum facing the west.  Devotees can worship the Lord only from outside. Later on, because of the fight among the local rulers and the difference of opinion among the Brahmins who looked after the temple, it lost all its property.  There was none to conduct any of the daily rituals. The temple is under the Malabar Devaswom Board.
