Chengamanad Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple is in Chengamanadu in the Thrissur district. Legend says that Jamgama Maharshi used to stay here in penance in a cave. He consecrated a Sivalinga here for his daily worship. Later the temple was established here by Kulashekhara Varma Perumal, the founder of the 2nd Chera Dynasty. The place was known as Jamgamanadu which later became Chengamanadu. It is under ten Namboothiri families including the famous Azhvaancherry Mana. At first, they managed the temple directly but later transferred the rights to the Ooranma Devaswom Board. Today the affairs of the temple are managed by the Ooranma Devaswom board and a committee of the local more people. Ganapathy and Uma Maheswara are also consecrated here.  Sapthamathrukkal is consecrated facing the north.  Outside the temple are Ayyappan and Sree Maha Vishnu facing the east. On the eastern side, there is Bhagavathy. Under the banyan tree are the Nagaraja and Nagayakshy. The temple festival is in the month of Dhanu concluding on the day of star Thiruvathira.
