This ancient Siva temple is at Chirakadavu in Kottayam district. The Siva Lingam here is believed to be self -originated under a Bilva tree. It was during the rule of the Alvars that the temple was built using the mud that was excavated from the eastern side of the site. This place is the temple tank now. The place came to be known as Chirakadavu as the pond (chira in Malayalam) was on the eastern side of the temple. It is also believed that the king who built the temple made an ashram near the Bilva tree and did penance there. The Lord is believed
more to have appeared before the King who came to be known as Kuwala (Bilva) Maharshi.
