Koovalassery Mahadeva Temple

History

Koovalassery Mahadeva Temple is situated in the village of Koovalassery, about 7 kilometres north of Neyyattinkara Town along the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari Highway in Kerala. This ancient and revered temple is located in Neyyattinkara Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, and is historically connected to the Travancore Royal Family, with the temple being managed by the Munchira Madom, who are its trustees. The name "Koovalassery" derives from the abundance of Koovala trees (Crateva religiosa), a sacred tree in Hinduism and a favourite of Lord Mahadeva, that once covered the area. Initially known as "Koovalachery," the name evolved into Koovalassery over time. The temple is located about 200 meters east of the main road, more providing a serene and spiritual setting. The temple's annual festival begins on the day of the Pooyam star in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March) and concludes after 10 days with the sacred Aarattu (holy bath) ceremony. The temple's Thantri (chief priest) is Sree Parameswaran Namboothiri of the Tharananalloor Mana. A stone mandapam (hall) lies about 30 meters from the main road, which was once used in ancient times for special rites of worship involving the presentation of a holy pot. However, these practices have ceased over the years. In the southwest corner of the temple, there once stood a math (hermitage) where devotees gathered for chants and prayers, but it has since fallen into disrepair due to a lack of proper maintenance.
