Parappadam Devi Temple

History

Parappadam Devi Temple, located in Illikkal along the Kottayam-Kumarakom road in Kottayam district, Kerala, holds a unique and revered place in local tradition. The temple's origin is attributed to the intense devotion of Thumbayil Karnavar, who, due to old age, was unable to travel to the famous Kodungallur temple. It is believed that the goddess's murti (idol) manifested as a result of his deep devotion, and the idol was first discovered amidst a tangle of creepers and vines. Initially, a temporary temple was constructed, and later, the Thekkumkoor king built the present structure. A distinctive and centuries-old tradition during the temple's flag-hoisting ceremony (Kodiyettu) involves a Muslim more family firing a ceremonial gun. This practice dates back to the time when Vazhakkoottathil Mammali, the commander of the Thekkumkoor naval forces, was entrusted by the Thekkumkoor king to safeguard the Devi murti until the temple was completed. As a mark of gratitude and honour, the ruler granted the Vazhakoottam family the privilege of firing a gun at every Kodiyettu. To this day, a chosen member of the Vazhakoottam family continues this ritual, symbolizing the enduring bond between the temple and the family that once protected the deity.
