History

This ancient, famous temple at Kandanassery village in Thrissur district is one of the most important temples in central Kerala. It is under the Kochin Devaswam Board and is a Protected Monument of the Archaeological Survey of India. This temple is mentioned in ancient compositions like ‘ Chandrolsavam’ and the hymns composed by Vilwamangalath Swamiyar. The temple is unique for the consecration of Harikanyaka, the sculptures on the temple structure, and the special rituals. Harikanyaka and Shastha as the sons of Mohini are consecrated here. The Goddess is consecrated as showing the Abhya and Varada signs in her hands. No elephants are allowed to enter the temple more compound and no artistic presentation where the actor wears a crown is conducted here. The festival lasts for 15 days. The rice powder, jaggery and coconuts required to prepare Ada, a special offering on Pooram Ganapathy are brought from Kandanassery Moozhikulangara Mahavishnu temple. It is considered a special blessing for women to worship the Goddess when she is kept on the Namaskara Mandapam for hoisting the flag on the festival's first day. Mandalam is celebrated for 30 days at this temple and the remaining 11 days at the Chovvalloor Mahadeva temple.  Legends associate Perumthachan, one of the famous members of the legendary Parayipetta Panthirukulam with the construction of the temple. It is believed that he found that the temple structure was slanting to one side and inserted his chisels on the western and northern sides of the temple to correct it. The chisels can still be seen there. The Archeological department initiated some restorative work but many parts of the temple are in very bad shape calling for restoration and renovation.
