Pournamikavu Bhadrakali Temple, located in Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is dedicated to Shri Bala Tripura Sundari Devi, the war-goddess of the ‘Aay Dynasty’. Also known as the Akshara Devatha Temple, it is unique for consecrating and worshipping all 51 Akshara Devathas (Alphabet Goddesses), a first of its kind globally. The temple also houses around 25 sub-deities. This temple opens only on the full moon day (Pournami) and on special occasions such as Navaaham, festivals, and Vidhyarambham. The temple is famous for its impressive idols, including the largest Panjamukha (five-faced) Ganesha idol carved from a single block of Krishna Shila, standing at 200 cm tall, the largest Nagaraja idol in a single stone, standing at 275 cm tall, and the world’s largest Panjaloha idol of Pournamikavu Devi, which is 6.5 feet tall and weighs 1300 kg. On Pournami days, various rituals are performed, including Maha Ganapathi Homam, Akshara Devatha Pooja, Saraswathi Pooja, Sarva Shaapa Dosha Shanthi Pooja, Lakshmi Pooja, Pournami Pooja, Kalasha Pooja, Kalasha Abhisheka, Sri Chakra Pooja, Panja Shakthi Pooja, KaryaSidhi Pooja, Chandika Homam, Gurusi Pooja, Naagar Pooja, Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Pooja, Kula Devatha Pooja, Kaala Sarpa Dosha Shanthi Pooja, and Mruthyunjaya Pooja. Devotees also participate in the ‘Deepa Pradhakshinam’ by offering ghee lamps to the Goddess. The temple is actively involved in charitable activities, such as providing free and unlimited food to devotees on Pournami days from morning until midnight, distributing free study materials to students, and providing grocery kits to the underprivileged.
