History

Mallam Shree Durgaparameshwari Temple is an ancient temple in Muliyar Village near Bovikanam, in the Kasargod District of Kerala. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga Parameshwari, was built by the Karade Brahmins from Maharashtra and has been well preserved over the centuries. A special feature of the temple is the daily Annadanam the distribution of food to devotees. The temple is especially crowded on Tuesdays and Fridays when devotees come to offer prayers for prosperity and a happy life. According to a popular legend in Kerala, Goddess Durga vanquished the demon Daruka. Elsewhere in India, she is known for defeating Mahishasura. Durga Parameshwari also destroyed the demons more Chanda and Munda, who sought to marry her after being enchanted by her beauty. Angered, the goddess annihilated them, much to the relief of mankind. As an incarnation of Shakti, Durga is armed with Shiva’s trident, Kumara’s spear, Indra’s thunderbolt, and Vishnu’s discus and mace, embodying the divine power that sustains life on Earth.
