Trikandiyur Shiva Temple, located in Tirur in the Malappuram district of North Kerala, is a renowned pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva. This ancient temple is believed to have been established by Lord Parasurama, the legendary founder of Kerala. Surrounding the Shiva shrine are other temples, including a Krishna temple, the Ambalakulangare temple, and an Ayyappan Kavu. One of the major festivals celebrated here is Vaavulsavam, which draws numerous devotees. The temple is conveniently located 26 kilometres from Kozhikode International Airport, with Tirur railway station just 2 kilometres away, making it easily accessible to pilgrims. Historically, the temple was constructed in 823 CE by Cheraman Perumal. Initially, it
more was managed by 48 Mussath families, collectively known as Shivadiwjanambi. Over time, control passed to the Alathiyoor Namboothiri Sabha, and later to the Vettathu King. After the Vettathu royal family became extinct, the British East India Company handed over the temple to the Samoothiri (Zamorin). The temple was destroyed during the invasion of Tipu Sultan but was later rebuilt by Mandayapurathu Krishna Menon, with support from Vella Namboothiri of Panniyoor and Hydrose Kutty of Chavakkad.
