History

Thankekattu Ayyappa Temple is situated in Arookuty, Alappuzha district, with Lord Dharmasastha worshipped as Annadhana Prabhu as the main deity. The deity is depicted in a seated posture, with the right leg resting over the left, holding a ball of rice in the right hand and a poornakumbha (sacred pot) in the left. The temple also enshrines Goddess Sivakamasundari, consecrated by the Kytharam family. Though there are no clear records of the temple's origin, a bell donated by Champakaschery Swamiyar indicates that the temple is over 370 years old. The temple underwent renovations in 1970, and between 1989 and 1993, a trust was formed to manage it. more In 1994, a Deivaprashnam (astrological consultation) was conducted, leading to the resumption of the Dharma Sastha Utsavam after a gap of 60 years, with a flag-hoisting ceremony held on March 22, 1994. The trust overseeing the temple was dissolved in 1996, and the temple management was transferred to the Devaswom, with Sri P. Raman Embran appointed as president. Significant developments followed, including the Dwaja Prathishta (installation of the flag post) in 1997, the construction of an Aanapandal (elephant shelter) in 2003, and a road leading to the Aarattu Kadavu in 2010. A mandapam was also built for performing the Aarattu Pooja for Lord Dharmasastha. Today, the temple's rituals are conducted by Sri T.S. Ananthan and Sri P. Raman Embran, with guidance from Annamanada Kaasāmkottu Illam Thanthri. The temple is managed by the senior member of the Thankekattu family, Brammasri P. Raman Embran, who holds the power of attorney. He oversees the temple's affairs in consultation with Thandri Brammasri Narayanan Namboothiripad of Kaasāmkottu Mana, Annamanada.
